ABOUT THE RESIDENTS

Some project credits are fuzzy and may intentionally sidestep the issue of whether a project is by The Residents or Bobuck.

PSEUDONYMS

MAX

When Charles Bobuck concocted this playful bit of imagination based on the Carmina Burana in 1997, it was so far off track for The Residents that no one knew what to do with it except to make up some wild story to explain its existence. Pollex Christi might have been ignored if not for the begging of Ralph America to let them sell it as a small edition.

COMBO DE MECANICO

Another WTF project popped out of the Charles Bobuck brain in 2001. As with Pollex Christi, High Horses did not fit The Residents agenda and was only saved from total obscurity by Ralph America. "High" (as in LSD) and "Horses" (as in a carousel) remains one of the true oddities. Charles seems to gravitate toward Spanish when stressed and blames everything on his alter ego, "Carlos."

SONIDOS DE LA NOCHE

Charles Bobuck wrote Coochie Brake with the intent for it to be a Residents album. However, singer Randy Rose said he was too busy developing his solo performance project, Sam's Enchanted Evening. Charles Bobuck was uncomfortable working under his actual name at that time so he came up with Sounds of the Night, only in Spanish, Sonidos de la Noche.

CHUCK

When the decision to release a soundtrack for the DVD, Randy's Ghost Stories, was proposed, the title could have gone either as "The Residents - OST - Randy's Ghost Stories" or the more playful "Chuck's Ghost Music."

THE CHARLES BOBUCK CONTRAPTION

When fellow Residential person, Randy, burst into a solo direction, Charles was a bit bewildered and recorded an album as a reaction to also having a solo career that he never expected. Charles has never considered himself a composer in the normal sense, that he just "builds music out of junk." So the use of "Contraption" seemed to fit.

THE RESIDENTS

Rarely, but not totally unknown, The Residents will be hired to write an instrumental score. This may result in The Residents writing the score, or it may result in Charles Bobuck writing the score. Mush-Room is a good example because the credits list "Music by The Residents - a Charles Bobuck Contraption."
